Welcome to my website. My name is Dr Joanne McVey and I am a Consultant Clinical Psychologist based in York, UK. I have worked within the NHS for 30 years and I now work independently with individuals and organisations.
We are all unique individuals, with different life experiences and family backgrounds. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to cope with problems, however, seeing a psychological therapist can give you greater awareness about why you are acting or feeling certain ways. This knowledge, together with evidence-based and up to date coping strategies, can help you to feel calmer, more connected and more able to get on with the things that are important to you in life.
There is always a reason why problems develop- it isn`t easy being a human being! But with patience and compassion, it is always possible to find a better way to live life.
I specialise in helping adults who struggle with anxiety problems, depression, the impact of a traumatic event, life transitions, chronic illness and almost any issue that causes day to day psychological distress.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Compassion Focussed Therapy
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprogramming
I tend to use techniques from all these different therapies to help my clients in the way that I think will help them towards healthy and lasting change, in as short a time as possible.
I have been a member of the British Psychological Society for 25 years (BPS membership number 070763). I am fully registered with the HCPC (Healthcare Professions Council) (membership number PYL 19330) and have a current and ongoing DBS certificate .
Never work with a psychologist who is not registered with the HCPC!
